A Slithery Sonnet

Cool and deep
Long-tailed salamanders creep
From prying eyes we hide

Dark and wet
Nary a sunrise nor a sunset
In darkness we reside

Without gills
Or lungs with air to fill
How long can we abide?

Through our skin
Oxygen passes in
That’s the secret we’ll confide

Cool and deep
Long-tailed salamanders creep
In darkness we reside
